HONG KONG LIVES AND BREATHES SAINT-EMILION
Vinexpo Overseas’ exhibition from 25 to 27 May 2010 was on Saint-Emilion time:
- The Saint-Emilion Jurade launched the festivities with an exceptional gala dinner.
- Many Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac winegrowers travelled to Hong Kong and were seen pacing the aisles of the exhibition.
- Asian trade professionals and journalists thronged to take part in events that recalled the colours of Saint-Emilion wines.
VINEXPO ASIA-PACIFIC OPENING EVENING
It was the first time that the Saint-Emilion Jurade, in partnership with the Commanderie de Bordeaux in Hong Kong, organised the Vinexpo Asia-Pacific opening evening. This gala dinner took place in the prestigious setting of the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong in the presence of Mr Marc Fonbaustier, the French General Consul in Hong Kong, Ms. Yvonne Choi, Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong Government, Ms. Dominique Heriard Dubreuil, President of Vinexpo Overseas and President of the Directorate of Remy Cointreau Group, Mr Alain Vironneau, President of the Bordeaux-based CIVB, more than 500 business VIPs and about 50 journalists from all over Asia. This was a unique evening organised by the Saint-Emilion Jurade that included the induction of around 20 celebrities made up of wine professionals and major connoisseurs, and a dinner with matched dishes and wines, serving Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés and Saint-Emilion Premiers Grands Crus Classés.
TRAINING ASIAN TRADE PROFESSIONALS DURING VINEXPO ASIA-PACIFIC
Every day during the exhibition, 60 exclusively selected professionals took part in a tastingseminar on the 2007 vintage in the Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac appellations. Led by a delegation of winegrowers, these seminars were delivered in a different language every day: Cantonese, Mandarin, then English.
MEETINGS WITH THE ASIAN PRESS
The Saint-Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac winegrowers and their President Jean-François Quenin took advantage of the exhibition to respond to the many invitations to meet the wine and financial specialist press as well as journalists representing more general media. “These appointments with journalists from Hong Kong, China, Korea and Japan have helped us understand how the need for training is essential in these markets”, explained Jean-François Quenin, who was sometimes surprised by how unusual some of the questions were! More formally, a press lunch organised on the last day of the exhibition for the most important trade journalists of the Chinese market, was used to present the programme of the Saint- Emilion – Pomerol – Fronsac Wine Tour, which will visit the cities of Beijing, Chengdu, Canton, Xiamen and Shanghai from 22 to 26 November 2010.
CHATEAU PAVIE DECESSE WINS THE 12th SAINT-EMILION GRANDS CRUS CLASSÉS CHALLENGE
The Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés Challenge was again a resounding success. It was held for the third time in Hong Kong at the opening of the Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés Association’s tasting. A record number of professionals attended both events; more than 1,300 Asian business people crushed into the exhibition aisles to taste the Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés wines. In the Challenge organised by the Saint-Emilion Wine Council, 40 Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés competed head to head in blind tastings of 3 vintages: 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Château Pavie Decesse, owned by the Perse family, won the 12th Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Classés Challenge, having beaten Château Destieux, owned by Christian Dauriac, in the final. The semi-finalists were Château La Couspaude, owned by the Aubert family, which also
reached the semi-final in 2002 and 2004, and Château Monbousquet, also owned by the Perse family.
The awards ceremony will be held in Saint-Emilion at the next Spring Festival of the Saint- Emilion Jurade on Sunday 20 June 2010.
