The Tastavins del Penedès Academy presented the prizes of the 49th Penedès DO Quality Wines Competition on Tuesday 6 May on Sant Salvador Beach.
The Masia Freyé – Syrah/tempranillo wine by Domènech.Vidal was awarded the Gold Medal in the red vintage wines category at the 49th edition of the Penedès DO Quality Wines Competition.
This red wine has been aged in oak for around 5 months and is made from the Syrah variety harvested from the Masia Freyé vines in La Bisbal del Penedès and Ull de Llebre variety from the Vallfort estate in Sant Jaume dels Domenys. The product has a bouquet of great complexity, with fresh notes of spices, fruits (cherry and plum) and a few floral touches of violet, which come from the Syrah and contrast with the red fruits and liquorice nuances of the Ull de Llebre. The toasted notes from the cask are noticeable in the background. In the palate the wine is compact and mature, with the sweet savour of fully ripe tannins predominating.
The Masia Freyé – Syrah/tempranillo wine is recommended for red meats, barbecues, fresh, creamy cheeses and also for rice and pasta dishes. The RRP for this product is 6.99€.
Moreover, Domènech.Vidal also won the Silver Medal for the Masia Freyé – Xarel·lo/chardonnay wine in the young whites category. A characterful wine, powerful and well-structured with notes of jasmine, green apple and grapefruit on a sweet background of syrup and dried fruit. This wine won the gold medal in this same competition in the years 2012 and 2013. The RRP for this product is also 6.99€.
PENEDÈS DO QUALITY WINES COMPETITION
More than 120 items from 35 wineries participated in this competition organised by the Tastavins Academy with the support of the Penedès DO. The judging panel comprised 24 professionals, among them sommeliers, specialised journalists, oenologists and professors, and gave its verdict on the winners after a blind tasting.
